katabatic wind katabatic or downslope winds occur on clear nights over mountain slopes which are cool. Air in contact with the slopes is colder than air at the same level away over the valley.

As the valley floor radiates heat warm air forcing colder air from the slopes to flow down into the valley forming a Katabatic wind.
