The captain quietly accepts Paul's vehemence (with a restrained frustration) until he reacts in a way that might potentially alienate the FO from providing future input. Earlier intervention by the captain (affirming his command) in a pleasant manner - and in a way that wouldn't have compromised their working relationship - might have prevented a future damaging confrontation.
